Director Darren Lynn Bousman says Rebecca De Mornay had concerns about the subject matter in Mother’s Day before signing on to star in the film.
When a horror movie is remade, it is inevitable to compare it with the original. Although both should be evaluated on their own merits, contrasting them with each other is not unreasonable. It becomes particularly interesting when the remake significantly differs from the original. Mother’s Day (2010) is a remake of Mother’s Day (1980), but calling it a loose remake would be an understatement.

Summarizing Both Movies
Mother’s Day (1980)
The original Mother’s Day is a horror film that revolves around a family from the backwoods who kidnap and torture three women. The movie is a blend of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and The Last House on the Left (1972). The three abducted women are Trina (Tiana Pierce), Abbey (Nancy Hendrickson), and Jackie (Deborah Luce). These women are old college friends who meet once a year to catch up and hang out. During this annual reunion, one of them chooses a surprise location for the other two. Jackie chooses a camping trip in the deep woods of rural New Jersey, which unfortunately happens to be near the house of a murderous woman who lives with her two sons.
In the movie “Mother’s Day”, two brothers named Ike (credited as Holden McGuire) and Addley (credited as Billy Ray McQuade) kidnap three women and bring them to their mother, named Mother (credited as Rose Ross). Mother is overjoyed to see her sons mentally and physically abusing the women, with Jackie being the one who suffers the most. However, Abbey and Trina decide to take revenge on Mother and her sons, making “Mother’s Day” a movie about revenge.
Mother’s Day (2010)
“Mother’s Day” is a movie about a group of criminals who invade a house and hold the people inside hostage. The film is a mix of “Funny Games” and “The Last House on the Left”. The story begins when Ike and Addley rush to their mother’s house in the suburbs after their brother Johnny is shot during a failed bank robbery. However, they soon realize that the house has been foreclosed and the new owners, Beth and Daniel, are having a party with some friends. Ike and Addley decide to take the partygoers hostage while they wait for their mother and sister, Lydia, to arrive and help them deal with the situation. Rebecca De Mornay plays the role of Mother, while Deborah Ann Woll plays Lydia.
When Mother arrives, she discovers that Ike and Addley have been sending money to her previous address. However, Beth and Daniel claim to have no knowledge of the money being sent to their home. The family desperately needs money to evade law enforcement, so Mother devises a multi-part plan. She instructs Ike to take Beth out of the house to collect money from the bank accounts of their hostages. Meanwhile, Mother employs psychological tactics against the hostages to extract information about the money Ike and Addley had been sending.
