On November 9th of last year, Saltanat Nukenova was beaten to death by her husband, former minister Kuandyk Bishimbayev, in the VIP room of a restaurant located in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city.
The footage captured by the surveillance cameras in the restaurant reveals a disturbing scene. A man, who is said to be a member of the family that owns the restaurant, can be seen brutally attacking a woman named Nukenova. He repeatedly punches and kicks her before grabbing her by the hair and dragging her to a separate room that is not monitored by cameras. The incident is deeply troubling and has caused outrage among those who have viewed the footage.
Bishimbayev was called a fortune-teller when his wife Nukenova was dying in their suite, covered in blood. The fortune-teller told him that she would be fine. It took 12 hours for an ambulance to arrive, but by then, it was too late. Nukenova passed away at the age of 31.

Bishimbayev, 44, has admitted to causing her death but denied acting with “exceptional cruelty”, which he has been charged with.
The ongoing murder trial, which is being live-streamed on social media like a dark reality show, has captured the attention of not only Kazakhstan but also Russia and beyond. It has sparked a debate about traditional gender roles.

It is a tragic reality that every year, approximately 400 women in Kazakhstan lose their lives as a result of domestic violence. These women are victims of a heinous crime that shakes the very foundation of our society. It is disheartening to note that this number could be even higher, as many instances of domestic abuse go unreported, leaving many women to suffer in silence. We must take steps to address this issue and ensure that our communities are safe places for all.
